Holly Berries Hairdo How to:

Tools: Curling iron, crimping iron, and/or hot rollers,
Mason Pearson Brush, a rattail comb, bobby pins, hair
pins, Aveda Air Control hair spray, wreath-making holiday
berries on one continuous wire, and wire cutters.

Begin the style by selecting a texture for the hair.  The hair
must be set with some type of textural pattern in order to
blend with and adhere to the holly berries.  On Kari, we
choose a small coiled curl pattern in order to
accommodate her medium length haircut and select a
combination of gold and white berries to accent her beige-
blonde hair color.

I begin by setting the hair in small spiral curls using a 3/4-
inch curling iron beginning in the nape and working in 1/2-
inch subsections until the front hairline is reached. Using
the same textural pattern, Kari's bangs are addressed as
a separate section and curled downward in order to create
a soft face-framing effect. In the crown, begin to backcomb
an inch by inch subsection of hair using the rattail comb.
Gather this section with your fingers or with the Mason
Pearson brush into a loose bunch of curls and secure the
base with a bobby pin.  This will be the anchor for the rest
of the hairstyle.  Take the first of a series of concentric
circular sections of hair around this base and backcomb it
at the root. While leaving the curl pattern intact, pin the
hair securely with bobby pins into and around the base in
a shape that you see fit.  More back-combing and less
smoothing with the brush will give the style a more
deconstructed, messy feel.   Spray with hairspray as
needed.  Continue this step with subsequent circular
sections until you reach the outside hairline.  When all the
hair is pulled up and pinned in place check for balance
and symmetry.  Again, address the bangs separately, but
make sure they blend with the rest of the style.  Spray with
Aveda Air Control Hairspray.  Using the wire cutters, cut
approximately two yards of the wire with the berries.  Begin
in the front hairline and wind the berries around the head
in a Grecian style until you reach the crown area or top of
the hairstyle. Secure with pins as needed.  You may pull
pieces of hair from between the wires to enhance the
contrast between the hair and the berries.  Finish with
hairspray.  It's beginning to look a lot like Christmas…
